The Single Source of Truth

I was on a call a couple weeks back with a developer, a GC, and a guy named Matt who's building his drone business. We were talking about what drone data actually does on a job site — not the marketing stuff, the real stuff.

And somewhere in that conversation, it hit me.

A single source of truth for what's there now.

That's what we're selling. Not maps. Not orthos. Not point clouds. A timestamped, georeferenced, undeniable record of what a site looked like at a specific point in time. And if you're in construction, that's worth more than all the fancy software in the world.


The Baseline

Every job I fly starts the same way. I get there before anybody else. Before the first excavator digs. Before the first boot hits the ground. I establish current grade. A baseline of what that site looks like before anyone touches it.

Why? Because six months from now, when somebody's pointing fingers about who caused that asphalt damage or where that extra 2,000 yards of dirt went, I've got the answer. It's dated. It's timestamped. It's accurate to within a tenth.

I had a job where an $80,000 change order came down because of asphalt damage. The town was over-watering a retention area. Heavy trucks were running in and out. There was pre-existing damage the client didn't cause. My baseline flight from four months earlier showed exactly what was there before anybody else showed up. You can't argue with the data. Bottom line, it's always about the money.

OpenSpace wrote a good piece on how drone surveys give you "high-resolution aerial imagery that gets turned into orthomosaic maps, 3D models, point clouds, and elevation data within hours." The key word isn't "maps." It's "within hours." Because when your OAC meeting is tomorrow at 8 AM and the superintendent needs numbers, you don't have days.


Accuracy Above All Else

Here's where most drone pilots get it wrong. They fly a site, run it through whatever software came with their drone, and hand the GC a map. They don't verify. They don't check. They don't cross-reference.

I use Pix4D. Started with Mapper, moved to Matic. I still keep both because there are things one can do that the other can't. Pix4D's own case studies show how Parsons Construction uses their platform to track quantities and "create a single source of truth." Same principle. But here's the part they don't tell you — you don't let the student grade his own paper. You don't ask a car manufacturer if his vehicle is safe. They're always going to give you the same answer. It's perfect. It's great.

I use a secondary software to verify my accuracy. Every time. I've got 21 control points and checkpoints on my active job site. I'm checking my numbers against a second system before I hand them over. If the engineer comes back and says "Michael, you're not at six hundredths, you're at nine" — I'm still under a tenth. That's the standard.

TruTec's guide makes the point that "a successful drone survey is usually won or lost before the drone's props even start spinning." Couldn't agree more. Flight planning, overlap settings, control point placement — that's where the accuracy lives. Not in the processing software.


What the Drone Can't See

I tell my clients this up front — the drone can't map what it can't see. Vegetated sites? That's LiDAR territory. I know people who do that work, and I send them the jobs I can't handle. But for a construction site — grubbed, graded, ready for work — photogrammetry is the right tool.

The sweet spot is non-vegetated sites flown at the right time of day. I'm on site at 5 AM. Shadows are the enemy. Solar noon is ideal, but early morning gets you calm winds and flat lighting. Shutter speeds at 640-800. The wind on the Colorado plains doesn't wait for anybody, so you beat it to the punch.

Pro tip of the day: if you're flying thermal, don't do it in broad daylight. You need that temperature gradient. Show up after sunset. Otherwise you have no clue what you're looking at.


Not Replacing Surveyors

The question I get most often: "Can a drone replace a surveyor?"

No. And I say that clearly every time. Boundary work, building corners, ALTA surveys — that's not what we do. We work adjacent to surveyors. A licensed PLS comes out, sets the control network, and never comes back. I use that same control network. I fly the site every two weeks. I give the superintendent fresh data the morning of his OAC meeting.

What a drone can do is eliminate the rework. The re-measuring. The "I think it was 11,800 cubic yards but let me walk it again" nonsense. TruTec says it — "Instead of an estimator manually poring over photos or blueprints, the AI does the heavy lifting." Same idea. The drone does the heavy lifting so the people on site can make decisions.


The Bottom Line

A single source of truth isn't a map. It's not a point cloud. It's not a pretty 3D model you can spin around on your iPad.

It's the answer to the question nobody wants to ask: What was there, and when?

When the change order comes. When the subcontractor says "it was like that when I got here." When the owner wants to know why the schedule slipped. That timestamped, verified, accurate-to-a-tenth dataset is the difference between a he-said-she-said and a closed case.

That's what I deliver. Not drone services. Not mapping. A single source of truth.

And you can't put a price on that.
